Inpatient Surgery

Inpatient surgery refers to surgery that occurs on patients who are currently hospitalized and those who will be hospitalized following their surgery (same-day admission).

Patients' who have same day admission surgery will have the same preoperative and interoperative experience as those who are discharged. However, the postoperative course is different in the following ways:

  • Greater emphasis on postoperative pain management. Many of the techniques described on the pain management page require careful monitoring and follow-up, which can only be accomplished in the hospital.
  • Closer postoperative monitoring of patient recovery. The surgeon has requested admission to the hospital for one or more reasons: pain management, observation for improvement and/or complications, physical or occupational therapy, etc. These services require the expertise and care usually found in the hospital setting.
